Iran protests: is this time different?
By Mehdi Kia
The protest movement that began on 28 December differs from those in previous years. There is universal recognition that the protests were triggered off by the worsening economy of the country, unemployment, and the unfulfilled promises made after the singeing of the nuclear accord by the Rouhani administration with the major global powers two years ago

Trump presidency
how far will the darkness spread
Mohammad Reza Shalguni
Trump’s election to the presidency last November was not a normal event and in all likelihood will be remembered as a watershed moment in history. The victory of Trump was more than the victory of one of the sections of the ruling class in America. It was the signal of the deepening of general crisis that is taking our world towards barbarism

The Communist Manifesto: A weapon of war
written over 160 years ago, the Communist Manifesto remains as relevant as ever. For generations of workers, socialists and communists, whether in factories, manning the barricades, students, guerrillas in the jungles and hills, the Communist Manifesto was, and remains, a weapon of war........

Can the Kurdish Left Contribute to Turkey’s Democratization
ÖDÜL CELEP
The current peace process regarding Turkey’s Kurdish question
could pave the way for the normalization of politics and democratization
in Turkey if the existing opportunities are not missed. The major actors
that represent the Kurdish left in Turkey, the PKK and the HDP (formerly
BDP), are all equally significant parts of the peace process. The HDP in
particular has the potential to turn into a constructive actor for Turkey’s
democratization in the near future. This article argues that the Kurdish
left of the democratic, parliamentary stage, lately the HDP, could contribute
to Turkey’s democratization if it can fulfill the libertarian left policy
space in Turkish politics, which has long been abandoned by all existing
political parties.

Turkey, the Erdogan Government and the Left Today
An Interview with Oguzhan Müftüoğlu by Dan La Botz
Dan La Botz
Müftüoğlu participated in activities of the People’s Liberation Party-Front of Turkey (THKP-C) together with its leader Mahir Çayan and his comrades, until the Kızıldere incident of 1972. He was put on trial that year because of his association with Dev-Genç and THKP-C, found guilty and sentenced to prison, though he was released by the 1974 general amnesty after having served nearly three years. During the 70s, he played a crucial role in establishing the Revolutionary Youth (Dev-Genç) movement and then the Revolutionary Path (Dev-Yol). He was tried as the number one defendant during the main Revolutionary Path trial that followed the military coup of September 12, 1980. He was released in 1991 after serving 11 years in the prison. He subsequently played a part in the establishment of the Foundation for Social Research, Culture and Art (TAKSAV), of the Freedom and Solidarity Party (öDP) and of the daily newspaper BirGün. He is today a member of the öD

The Working Class and Left Politics
Dan La Botz
The current crisis in its economic, ecological, and foreign policy dimensions has still not produced the levels of discontent and social struggle necessary to propel politics to the left on a very large scale, though, of course, we will continue with whatever energy is available to put forward political alternatives. While only a democratic socialist reorganization of society will be able to deal with these issues, we should continue to support such efforts as several of those described here which lay out a political vision and program to the left of the Democratic Party, and which in some cases find an electoral strategy for success. Every effort to build real political power to the left of the Democratic Party—particularly when it is linked to the social movements—deserves our support, whether it is carried out under the banner of the Green Party, a socialist organization, or some labor or independent flag. Still, the most important task is to put more steam in the piston, to increase the bandwidth, to build the social and labor movements, constructing the power to change politics.....

The Big Giveaway
Economic Disinformation Keeps Financial Markets Up
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
The latest payroll jobs report is more of the same. The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that 223,000 new jobs were created in April. Let’s accept the claim and see where the jobs are.
Specialty trade contractors are credited with 41,000 jobs equally split between residential and nonresidential. I believe these are home and building repairs and remodeling.
The rest of the jobs, 182,000, are in domestic services.
Despite store closings and weak retail sales, 12,000 people were hired in retail trade.
Despite negative first quarter GDP growth, 62,000 people were hired in professional and business services, 67% of which are in administrative and waste service

Farewell to the United Kingdom
TARIQ ALI
The Labour leadership contest is a no-hoper for the Left. The names being touted are worse than useless. What would help a great deal is if early in the new parliament, the handful of left MPs effectively broke from Labour and established a new, radical caucus to link up with forces outside. I doubt that they will and here the Bennite tradition is, to put it at its mildest, unhelpful. Its attachment to Labour at a time when the party broke with its own social-democratic past and opted for a full-blown capitalism was wrong-headed and led to an impasse. ....
We need an alliance of all radical forces to build an anti-capitalist movement in England. A movement that is both new but also prepared to search the past for help: the Grand Remonstrance of the 17th century, the Chartist rebellions of the 19th century, the more recent developments in South America, Greece and Spain also offer a way forward

The Greek Endgame
Time to Choose Between Default and Defeat
Jérôme Roos
The conclusion from all of this is fairly straightforward: if Greece is adamant to repay its creditors in full, it will first have to convince them to disburse further bailout funds – which they will only be willing to do if the Syriza-led government abandons the anti-austerity platform on which it was elected. If, by contrast, the leftists are adamant on overturning the austerity measures against which they originally campaigned, the only real option that remains for them is to simply stop spending their scarce resources on repaying external creditors – and default.\r\n\r\nIn other words, it’s high time to forget about all the friendly rhetoric about Greece reaching a “mutually beneficial” deal with its creditors. The endgame is here. The Eurozone will not back down. Either the Greek government defaults, or it will be defeated. There is no other way

US Economy Collapses Again—4th Time in 4 years
Jack Rasmus
Data released last week by the US government showed the US economy came to a near halt in the first three months of 2015, falling to nearly zero—i.e. a mere 0.2% annual growth rate for the January-March quarter. The collapse was the fourth time that the US economy in the past four years either came to a virtual halt or actually declined. Four times in four years it has stalled out. So what’s going on?\r\n\r\nIn 2011, the US economy collapsed to 0.1% in terms of annual growth rate. At the end of 2012, to a mere 0.2% initial decline. In early 2014, it actually declined by -2.2%. And now in 2015, it is essentially flat once again at 0.2%.

Make common cause with Greece
Syriza coming to power in Greece at the end of January has finally disproven the argument that it is possible to implement an alternative to neoliberalism within the framework of the European Union. The EU treaties are neoliberal, in their very DNA. Since the 1986 Single European Act, or even before then, we have seen constant proof of the EU’s neoliberal DNA, and even its hardening. Up till now, the untrammeled hegemony of neoliberalism could have been blamed on this or that government coming into office: in this view, the reason why austerity policies reigned across Europe was that a François Hollande, a Matteo Renzi or some other social-liberal lacked courage or betrayed their campaign commitments to reorient European policies

Are Trade Unions In Crisis?
Over the last few decades, trade unions in most European countries (a noteworthy exception being Belgium) have suffered a more or less drastic drop in membership – a trend that has been barely affected in either direction by the advent of economic and financial crisis in 2007. But this ‘stability’ does not go far enough to enable us to make any final judgement concerning ‘the state of the trade unions

Greece: the Confrontation
by BERTRAND RENOUVIN
Between Athens and Berlin, supported by Frankfurt [the European Central Bank], the confrontation is political. But it is not a matter of a conflict between two legitimate entities as numerous Eurocrats want us to believe. It is not some democratic European institutions, rooted in representativeness across half a continent, which attempt to assert their legitimate rights in opposition to the democratic institutions of a small country.

Why should the Greek debt be audited?
When she was sworn in as President of the Greek Parliament, Zoe Konstantopoulou promised that steps would be taken to ensure that the Parliament made an essential contribution to supporting the claim that most of the debt had to be cancelled and that dispositions containing the current humanitarian crisis had to be integrated. She said parliamentary diplomacy was neither a mere ritual nor the equivalent of public relations. She added that there should be a parliamentary demand for a fair solution that would benefit the Greek people, with cancellation of part of the debt and a moratorium on repayment, and calling upon other parliaments and other European peoples that are already marching to show their solidarity with the Greek people. |23|.....
As Zoe Konstantopoulou told Le Monde on 7 March 2015 ‘People have a right to demand that any part of the debt that the commission should prove illegal be cancelled.’....

Time Isn’t on Our Side
For Syriza, there is an alternative to “strategic retreat
stathis kouvelakis
the situation were best conveyed by Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis, who stressed before parliament this month that “the country is at war, a social and a class war with the lenders” and that in this war “we will not go like cheerful scouts willing to continue the policies of the memorandum.”....n order for this battle to be won — and it should be emphasized that despite the setbacks and the losses, the outcome of the battle remains undecided in this war, those that side with Europe will have a hard time winning a majority of the Greek people. It is also true, however, that the atmosphere of the government’s first few weeks, which lifted people’s spirits and drove them into the streets, has radically changed. Nonetheless, nothing dictates that this spirit cannot be revived.......\r\n\r\nIn order for this to happen, however, the horns of battle have to blow again, and the ensuring struggle has to be waged with all due seriousness and determination — not ......with PR stunts and rhetorical contortions......there needs to be proper preparation

On Syriza and Podemos
David Harvey
If we are really for historical-geographical materialism, then we have to recognise that contradictions are always evolving and so, too, must our categories. So by talking about the ‘1 percent’, Occupy succeeded in introducing this concept into common parlance. And it is clear that the 1 percent massively increased its wealth, as Piketty and all the data show. To put that into different terms, to speak of a 1 percent is to recognise that we have created a global oligarchy, which is not the same thing as the capitalist class but is at the centre of it. It is a sort of keyword that serves to describe what the global oligarchy is doing, saying and thinking......

‘Out of the Euro!
Wolfgang Streeck
The countries of the south must be allowed a soft exit, perhaps with a south-euro that does not require from them society-destroying ‘reforms’ – and those who at the start of the currency union talked them into bottomless sub-prime credits must confess their guilt as much as those who were conscious of what was happening but said nothing. In place of the artificial gold standard in relations with northern Europe, there must be a currency regime that allows flexibility and excludes arbitrariness. The number of economists, including such heavyweights as the American Alan Meltzer, who demand just this, has grown rapidly in recent times. It is high time indeed for those who understand something of what has to be done to reflect constructively on the details. To paraphrase Mario Draghi: ‘whatever it takes’ – only, not to save the Euro, but to save Europe......
